Basic rig involves several steps that can give the object ability to manipulate its dimensions and help create possible animation.
This is basic rig of a beach ball
The above image shows the curves applied on ball to rig. A non-linear deformer is applied to get the stretch and squash. Curves are used as tools to manipulate the dimension of ball according to user.

Parent constrain and scale constrain help in limiting the stretch and squash to extent. The outliner shows the functions carried on to rig.
